Saar: Although priced at par with the entry-level trim, it gets more equipment as standard.

In a bid to spice up the Swift’s package for the upcoming festive period, Maruti Suzuki has launched the Swift Special Edition in India. It is available with petrol and diesel engines. While the former is priced at Rs 4.99 lakh, the latter carries a price tag of Rs 5.99 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom Delhi). Car nutters will immediately tell you that those prices are for the LXi and the LDi trims respectively.

So, what does the Special Edition brings to the table? Without asking for a single extra rupee, the Swift Special Edition comes with more equipment in its package. Over the standard LXi/LDi trim, the Special Edition gets single-din, Bluetooth enabled music system with two speakers, dual airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, front power windows and Tilt steering. It also gets an anti-theft system and black painted full wheel covers.

As you’d expect, there are no mechanical changes to report. If you opt for petrol-powered Swift Special Edition, you will get a 1.2-litre mill under the bonnet with 83PS/113Nm on tap. The diesel-powered Special Edition gets a 1.3-litre motor which produces 75PS/190Nm. Both engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Like the LXi/LDi trim, the Swift’s Special Edition isn’t available with an automated manual transmission (AMT). Maruti Suzuki claims that the mileage figures for the petrol- and diesel-powered Swift are 22kmpl and 28.4kmpl respectively.

In India, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is the bestselling model in its segment. The hatchback competes with the likes of the Ford Figo, Hyundai Grand i10 and the Toyota Etios Liva. The Maruti Suzuki Swift became the quickest car in India’s automobile history to clock overall sales of 1 lakh units. It managed to clock that figure in just 145 days. That said, the Swift’s journey hasn’t been without hiccups. It has been part of two voluntary recall campaigns this year – one in May and the other in July.
