Volkswagen’s least-expensive offering – the Polo – is ready to bow out of service in India. But before it does that, its maker wanted to introduce the final “special edition”. So, here it is – the Polo Legend Edition. It is available in just one variant, wearing a price tag of Rs 10.25 lakh. In other words, it costs just over Rs 25,000 more than the donor variant – the GT TSI. The fifth-gen Polo has been on sale in India since 2010, receiving facelifts and limited-run versions over the years. And VW never introduced the next-gen version here, which debuted in 2017.

So, for what are you paying the extra amount? In short – some embellishments. What are those? The limited-run variant features ‘Legend’ branding on the fender and the boot lid. The latter also boasts some garnish to set it apart from the rest of the range. Besides those, the hatchback gets sporty decals on the side and a black roof. And that’s it. For the record, the GT TSI variant is no longer available.

Powering the Polo Legend Edition is the 1.0-litre TSI motor that produces 108bhp and 175Nm of peak torque. The only transmission option available is the 6-speed torque converter. Volkswagen claims a mileage of 16.47kmpl with that engine-gearbox combo in the Polo.

Features? Well, there’s nothing new to report. The list includes auto-dimming IRVM, cruise control, a cooled glovebox, a touchscreen infotainment system, powered ORVMs and 16-inch alloy wheels. Other features, such as support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Hill Hold Control, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control and opening & closing of windows with the key remote, are also part of the package.

Over the 12-year stint, the Polo racked up over 3 lakh sales. It was the first car in the segment to get dual airbags as standard. As for the Polo Legend Edition, only 700 units will be made. While it’s here on our shores, the hatchback will continue to compete with the Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz and the Honda Jazz.
