Saar: The new entry-level trim for the sedan and SUV are priced at Rs 51.90 lakh and Rs 52.90 lakh respectively.

Volvo Auto India likes to do things quietly. It silently introduced the T8 Inscription trim for the XC90 back in June this year and not many knew about it beforehand. Now, the carmaker has done it again. Without creating any fuss, it has introduced new variants for the S90 sedan and the XC60 SUV. The name of the variant carries the tag D4 Momentum. The new trims for the sedan and the SUV are priced at Rs 51.90 lakh and Rs 52.90 lakh respectively (both prices, ex-showroom India).

Up until now, the Volvo S90 and the Volvo XC60 were available in single variants – D4 Inscription and D5 Inscription respectively. The new trim for both the models undercuts the previously available Inscription-marked variants by a whopping Rs 7 lakh. So, what all will you miss out on? Let’s find out.

We’ll start with the Volvo S90. What’s common between the Momentum and Inscription trims? The D4 tag. That means both house the same engine-transmission combination underneath. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission, feeds 190PS/400Nm to the front wheels. The only difference on the mechanical front is that the new trim gets a Dynamic Chassis instead of the air suspension, which is available in the dearer trim.

That leaves us with the list of creature comforts that the two trims of the Volvo S90 have on offer. And that’s where the major differences are. The D4 Momentum trim misses out on features like a powered sunshade, Nappa leather upholstery, power adjustable side support, backrest massage and heated function for front seats, powered tailgate, head-up display and dual integrated tailpipes. The new trim also gets a Harman Kardon sound system instead of the premium Bowers and Wilkins setup and has to make do without the safety gizmos like blind spot information system with cross traffic alert, collision mitigation support and a 360-degree camera.

Moving over to the Volvo XC60 D4 Momentum. The new trim and the D5 Inscription trim are powered by the same engine-transmission combination. But where the Inscription has 235PS/480Nm on tap, the D4 Momentum has to only 190PS/400Nm to play with. The engine in both states of tune comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The lack of oomph in the new trim means it will top out at 210kmph, which is 20kmph less than the D5 Inscription. The XC60 in the D4 Momentum trim loses out on the air suspension and Volvo’s Four-C Chassis. The new trim also has a smaller fuel tank – 60 litres – as compared to the 71-litre capacity in the D5 Inscription.

No points for guessing, there are differences in the feature-list too. In the D4 Momentum trim, the Volvo XC60 misses out on gizmos like Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, power folding rear headrests and a powered tailgate. There’s also no 12V socket in the cargo area, no dual integrated tailpipes, no head-up display and no Bowers and Wilkins sound system. The list of safety tech is also on the slimmer side as the new trim misses out on Park Assist Pilot, 360-degree camera, collision mitigation support at the rear and blind spot information system with cross traffic alert.

Even with those features out of the equation, both the models in their respective D4 Momentum trims are handsomely equipped. The list of features includes 4-zone climate control, powered sunroof, adaptive cruise control, auto-dimming IRVM and ORVMs, Volvo’s awesome Sensus infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, built-in navigation and LED headlamps with automatic bending functionality.

In India, the Volvo S90 competes with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF. The Volvo XC60, on the other hand, rivals the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Audi Q5. With the new, less expensive trims, Volvo Auto India is trying to take the game to its rivals. Volvo already assembles the S90 in India. It will be soon be joined by the XC60.
