Saar: It becomes the second plug-in hybrid variant to go on sale on our shores.

Volvo Auto India has silently added a second petrol-hybrid variant of its flagship product – the XC90. Called the T8 Inscription, it is priced at Rs 96.65 lakh. At that price, it sits below the T8 Excellence variant, which is priced at Rs 1.31 crore (both prices ex-showroom India).

As you’d expect, the similarities between the aforementioned variants of the XC90 lie in the ‘T8’ tag. The newly introduced variant gets the same powertrain underneath. Speaking of which, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is coupled to an electric motor. The total power output is rated at 390PS/640Nm. Transmission duties for the Plug-in Hybrid are handled by an 8-speed automatic transmission and power is routed to the road via an all-wheel-drive system. Volvo claims that with the T8 twin-engine powertrain underneath, the XC90 can complete the nought to 100kmph sprint in 5.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 230kmph.

Since it isn’t as expensive as the T8 Excellence, the feature list isn’t as plush either. But you still get goodies like four-zone climate control, humidity sensor, LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, 12-inch digital instrument cluster and powered front seats. If all that is a bit poor for your liking, you also get rain-sensing wipers, automatic IRVM, powered tailgate, a 224-watt, 10-speaker sound system and a seven-seat layout. That last one is one of the major differences between this and the T8 Excellence, which is available in a four-seat layout only.

Next-Gen Volvo XC90 Will Be Offered With ‘Highway Assist’

It is a Volvo and that too with an Inscription nameplate. That means the standard list of safety gadgets is more than enough. The list includes hill start assist, hill descent control, seatbelt reminder for all seats, ISOFIX anchorages, oncoming lane mitigation, lane keeping aid and Volvo’s Pilot Assist.

The Volvo XC90 competes with the likes of the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE and the BMW X5. The hybrid variants of the Volvo XC90 have only one direct competitor in India – the Lexus RX 450h. That said, the rivalry is purely based on their price. Like the Volvo XC90, the Lexus RX 450h is available in two hybrid trims – Luxury and F Sport. While the former is priced at Rs 1.29 crore, the latter retails at Rs 1.32 crore (both prices ex-showroom India).
