If you’ve been following the auto industry closely, you’d know that there’s a shortage of semiconductors on a global level. Because of that, carmakers have had to make difficult decisions such as stopping the production line or, at least, slowing it down. Part of the affected bandwagon is Volvo Cars. It wanted to kick-start its EV journey in India this year, but that’s not going to happen. Due to the issue mentioned above, it has deferred the launch of the XC40 Recharge in India. That will now happen early next year, soon after bookings open. As per the original plan, bookings for the XC40 Recharge were supposed to open in June 2021.

Here’s what Jyoti Malhotra, who is the managing director at Volvo Car India, said in an official release:

The global shortage of semiconductors has resulted in Volvo having to reschedule the production of XC40 Recharge. Subsequently, Volvo Car India has also decided to defer the bookings and launch of the XC40 Recharge to early next year. The company believes in giving a committed delivery date to customers once they book. Volvo Car India will continue to deliver the current lineup. Our XC40 and S60 petrol variants are already available in India and we will introduce petrol variants of our premium sedan S90 and mid-size luxury SUV XC60 this year as we are committed to phase out diesel cars by end of this year. This is in line with our ambition to become a full electric car company by 2030.

If that has put you off, here’s something that’ll cheer you up. Volvo Car India will launch petrol-powered and refreshed versions of the S90 sedan and the XC60 mid-size SUV. They will replace their diesel counterparts as Volvo aims to phase out all diesel-fed models from its India lineup by the end of 2021.

That’s not all. After introducing the XC40 Recharge, Volvo Car India will also launch the C40 Recharge. But with the first EV now delayed, expect the second one to land only in 2023.
