Saar: Honda claims that CVT-equipped variants have accounted for more than 30 per cent of the sedan’s sales to date.

Ever since the second-gen Honda Amaze launch in May this year, it has been the bestselling model in for the company every month. In the months of May, June and the July, the sub-4 metre sedan clocked 9,789, 9,103 and 10,180 sales respectively. Do the math and you’ll end up with a total figure of 29,702. Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) has now announced that the second-gen Amaze has recorded over 30,000 sales in the first three months of launch. That makes it the quickest selling model in that time frame in HCIL’s 20-year history.

The company has confirmed that the CVT-equipped variants, which are four out of the twelve on sale, accounted for more than 30 per cent of the sedan’s sales till date. It is the only car in its segment that has a diesel-CVT combination on offer. The Amaze helped HCIL to grow at 12.5 per cent from April to July 2018. In last month’s list of bestselling cars in India, the Honda Amaze bagged the tenth slot. During the same month last year, when Honda was still retailing the first-gen model, the sedan was not even amongst the top 25 bestsellers in the country.

Although the sales trend looks great for the second-gen Honda Amaze, it hasn’t been a journey without hiccups. In July, HCIL issued a voluntary recall for 7,290 units of the sedan to inspect the electric-assist power steering sensor harness. If we take 30,000 as the total number of sales to date, the units recalled make up for more than 24 per cent of the lot.

One main factor that helped the second-gen Honda Amaze to get a good start was the introductory price list. From August 1, 2018, Honda took that away and hiked the prices of the sedan by up to Rs 20,600. Honda is also likely to introduce the option of CVT in the top-spec VX trims in a few months.
