Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) revealed prices of the new i20 on November 5, 2020. The official bookings, however, opened on October 27, 2020. As expected, the fourth-gen premium hatchback is off to a promising start. The company says it recorded 20,000 bookings for the car in question in 20 days. Math fans will tell you that it averages out to a thousand bookings a day. What’s more, over 4,000 units were delivered to customers during the Diwali season.

Not bad, right! There’s more to digest. Over 85 per cent of the bookings have come for Sportz and above variants. That’s not really surprising since there are only two Magna-spec derivatives beneath the Sportz level. Want more numbers? Okay. Nearly 45 per cent of customers chose variants equipped with Hyundai’s Blue Link connected-car technology. That is available in all Asta and Asta (O) derivatives.

For those who want more readings from the data dump, Hyundai also confirms that nearly 30 per cent of customers opted for variants with a sunroof. That means they chose the Asta (O) trim level. Other takeaways include 35 per cent bookings for variants with the air purifier (Asta and Asta (O)), 25 per cent bookings for derivatives with IVT/iMT/DCT and approximately 20 per cent reservations coming for diesel-fed variants.

The i20 is the only car in its segment that is available with two petrol and one diesel engine. Even in the transmissions department, it offers a choice between automatic, manual and clutchless-manual. Customers even have the flexibility in colour options – single and dual-tone – as well as in the standard warranty. Courtesy of Hyundai’s ‘Wonder Warranty’, you can have the i20 with up to 5 years of cover.

In India, the Hyundai i20 competes directly with the Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and the Tata Altroz. If you had to buy, which one would be your choice?
