You’ve seen it before. You’ve probably read about it too. But now, it has received a price list. Hyundai Motor India has launched the all-new i20. And, it doesn’t wear the Elite or Active badge. At least not yet! Prices start at Rs 6.80 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 11.18 lakh. As for the number of variants, there are twenty-four covering one diesel mill, two petrol engines and dual-tone colour options in Sportz, Asta and Asta (O) trims. Here, check out the detailed price list:

Prices - New Hyundai i20

Asta (O)Rs 9,19,900--Rs 11,17,900Rs 10,59,900

The above price list will hold until December 31, 2020. Post that, it will receive an upward revision. And, the dual-tone add-on will cost Rs 15,000. So, a lot of choices. And since we’ve already got ourselves entangled in number games, why not play them all the way and then move on? Right then! As you can see, there are three engines to choose from – a 1.2-litre petrol (82bhp/114Nm with MT /87bhp/114Nm with IVT)); a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (118bhp/172Nm) and a 1.5-litre diesel (99bhp/240Nm). The naturally-aspirated petrol mill is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and an IVT. The three-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor comes with either a 7-speed DCT or an iMT, which is a clutchless manual system. As for the diesel engine, it comes only with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Here’s how the mileage figures stack up:

  • Petrol MT: 20.35kmpl
  • Petrol IVT: 19.65kmpl
  • Turbo-Petrol DCT: 20.28kmpl
  • Turbo-Petrol iMT: 20kmpl
  • Diesel MT: 25.2kmpl

That’s enough math. Let’s shift the focus on the list of features. Being a Hyundai, the new i20 comes loaded with gadgets. The list includes Blue Link connected-car tech, cruise control, LED-powered DRLs and projector headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, a powered sunroof and a digital instrument cluster with a TFT colour display. Suppose all that is a bit last week for you. In that case, the list of features also includes a built-in air purifier, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six airbags, a rear-view camera and electronic stability control.

Colours? There are six monotone and two dual-tone options. Falling the former category are white, silver, grey, red, copper and “Starry Night”. The latter one consists of either a white or red body with black roof. The i20 also becomes Hyundai’s third model to come with the flexibility of “Wonder Warranty”. You can choose one of the three standard warranty covers – 3-year/1,00,000km; 4-year/50,000km and 5-year/40,000km.

The new i20 aims to not just shake but jolt the premium hatchback segment in India. It rivals two ageing models – the Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo – and two siblings – the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Toyota Glanza. Lastly, there’s the Tata Altroz. Even though it is a great package, it just doesn’t offer the peace-of-mind that a Hyundai can. Do you agree?
