Tata Motors’ first car to feature the Impact design language, the Tiago, has received a revision in its package. The pocket-friendly hatchback now comes with ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (electronic brake distribution) and CSC (Corner Stability Control) as standard. These three safety features were earlier reserved only for the XZ and XZ+ trims.

Apart from that, dual airbags and front seatbelts with pretensioners & load limiters continue to be offered as optional extras on the XE, XM and XT trims. Another safety feature which is part of the options and isn’t offered as standard with the XE and XM trims of the Tata Tiago is the driver’s seatbelt reminder.

This revision of added safety features across the range is a welcome development. However, it is sad to see that Tata doesn’t even offer the driver’s side airbag as standard. Two of the Tiago’s direct competitors – the Maruti Suzuki WagonR and the Hyundai Santro – do offer that added safety. And the Datsun Go, which is part of the same segment, offers ABS with EBD and BA, rear parking sensors and dual airbags as standard.

The Tata Tiago is currently available with two engine options – 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol that puts out 85PS/114Nm and a 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder diesel which is good for 70PS/140Nm. While the former can be had with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT (automated manual transmission), the latter is only available with a 5-speed gearbox.

Apart from the standard range, the Tiago is also available in the NRG form and the go-fast JTP spec. The former is essentially a hunkered-up version of the standard car, whereas the latter is the least expensive hot-hatch currently available in India. The Tiago JTP is powered by a reworked 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine which produces 114PS/150Nm. Do the math and you’ll see that it packs an additional 29PS/36Nm of oomph.
