Saar: Based on how it is performing at the moment, its target of selling 20 lakh units by 2020 will be a walk in the park.

When Maruti Suzuki comes into an equation, the numbers game ought to be big. A while back, the Indo-Japanese carmaker set itself a target of selling 20 lakh units annually by the year 2020. Based on how the company is performing at the moment, that target, which was once arguably tagged as a bit too ambitious, will be a walk in the park. Clearly, Maruti Suzuki thinks so too and that’s why towards the end of last year, it announced that it will be aiming to sell 25 lakh vehicles per year by 2022-23.

Now though, according to a report published by ETAuto, Maruti Suzuki has set itself an even bigger target. After achieving, which we think it most probably will, the target of selling 25 lakh units per annum by 2022-23, the company is targeting to double that sales number by the year 2030. In other words, Maruti Suzuki will aim to sell 50 lakh vehicles per year by the end of next decade.

That’s still, more or less, 12 years away but it isn’t impossible. Over the 2017-18 fiscal, Maruti Suzuki sold approximately 17.8 lakh units, out of which 16.53 lakh units accounted for domestic sales. Compared to the same figures for the 2016-17 fiscal year, the company registered a growth of 13.4 per cent and 14.5 per cent respectively.

In April 2018, Maruti Suzuki clocked its highest-ever monthly sales in the domestic market by retailing approximately 1.65 lakh units. That figure accounted for a 55 per cent share in the market. If the company keeps the same monthly performance, by the end of this fiscal, it will be extremely close to its 20 lakh target.

Maruti Suzuki will be investing over Rs 20,000 crore in the next few years to not only develop new products and strengthen its research and development in India but also to reinforce its sales and marketing infrastructure. As per the report, Maruti Suzuki will invest over Rs 1,000 crore for land acquisition and set up more dealerships across the country.

Over the last fiscal year, it added nearly 350 sales outlets in India. Maruti Suzuki’s official website states that as on April 1, 2018, the company has 3,211 sales outlets and 3,403 service workshops.
