Maruti Suzuki has introduced the Dzire CNG for private buyers. The bi-fuel option is available in two variants – VXI and ZXI. In the same order, their prices are Rs 8.14 lakh and Rs 8.82 lakh. Compared with the corresponding petrol-only derivatives, the newcomers cost Rs 95,000 more.

For the first time, buyers can buy the Dzire CNG as a private car. Previously, CNG variants (named Tour) of the sub-4 metre sedan were available only for commercial use. Powering the Dzire CNG is a 1.2-litre engine that, when fed with petrol, pumps out 89bhp/113Nm. Those numbers, however, fall to 76bhp/98.5Nm when CNG is used for propulsion. Simple math reveals a deficit of 13bhp/14.5Nm. On the plus side, the Dzire CNG has a claimed fuel efficiency of 31.12km/kg. Finally, the only transmission option available is a 5-speed manual.

The VXI variant offers features like a Bluetooth-enabled audio system with four speakers, rear AC vents, rear armrest, remote keyless entry, all four power windows, central locking, height-adjustable driver’s seat and power foldable and adjustable ORVMs. The ZXI derivative adds stuff like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, alloy wheels, front fog lamps, rear defogger, push-button start/stop and automatic climate control.

In India, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire competes directly with Hyundai Aura (Rs 7.74 Lakh) and the Tata Tigor (Rs 7.69 – 8.29 lakh). The latter two also have CNG variants, but they aren’t as fuel-efficient as the Dzire. With Maruti Suzuki betting big on alternate fuels, one could expect more models from the carmaker to get CNG derivatives. In all probability, the Swift will be the next. Even Baleno and Ciaz cannot be ruled out.

So, here are a couple of questions – if you’re in the market to buy a pocket-friendly sub-compact car, which one would it be? Do you think the compromise on power and performance in favour of better mileage is justified?
