It was inevitable, wasn’t it! Lamborghini adopting the electrification route was on the cards. It was only a matter of when and not if. And today’s announcement from Stephan Winkelmann has painted quite a picture of how Lambo plans to join the electric bandwagon.

Over four years, the flamboyant Italians will have access to more than 1.5 million euros to march on and make electrified Lambos a reality. By the way, that influx of funds is the largest Lamborghini will ever have at its disposal. Significant disbursement will flow towards reducing CO2 emissions by 50 per cent by the beginning of 2025. Then, an all-new Lambo will join the party. That will become the fourth model in the company’s range of exotic offerings. And, it will be propelled solely by electricity. Yes, the upcoming car will be an EV. Food for thought – since Lamborghini is part of the VW Group, will that EV be a reskinned Porsche Taycan/Audi e-tron GT?

Before you enter the wonderland, there’s more. Lamborghini will upgrade its existing range to house electrified powertrains. Hybrid, to be precise. Although there’s no official confirmation on what sort of hybridisation will come into play, reports suggest Lambo will take the plug-in hybrid route. That’s different from what the limited-run Sian showcased – a mild-hybrid system using a supercapacitor. The first hybrid model will arrive in 2023, and by the end of 2024, all three will have electrification in their genes.

As we all know, weight murders the performance of a sports car. And we don’t want that happening in rampaging bulls from Italy. Thankfully, Lamborghini has a plan in place. To counter the added weight of electrification systems, Lamborghini will make use of lightweight carbon fibre materials. Now, all those developments are somewhat far in the future. Lambo fans need something now! To tick-mark that box, the carmaker will announce two new V12 models this year. All-in-all, expect a flurry of exciting updates from Sant’Agata Bolognese.
