Did you know that Lexus has been selling electrified vehicles since 2005? The journey started with the RX400h. By the end of April 2021, the sales counter of electrified vehicles surpassed the 2 million mark. Even though the luxury carmaker took nearly 16 years to reach there, you have to agree, this is an impressive achievement. Environmentally too, the record has had a positive impact. As per the company, the sales of electrified vehicles ensured a reduction in CO2 emissions of nearly 19 million tons. That’s equivalent to the combined carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 300,000 cars every year for a decade and a half.

Lexus serves more than 90 countries worldwide. Today, it sells nine models with electrification playing a vital role in propulsion systems. The list includes both HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles) and BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles). In 2020, one in every three cars Lexus sold had an electrification system in the mix.

Out of the 2 million sales, 2.02 million to be exact, the USA occupied the top spot with 540,000 units. At 480,000 and 401,000 units, Europe and Japan claimed the second and third places, respectively. Amongst the models, the electrified RX lead the way with 518,000 sales, followed by the ES at 384,000 and CT at 372,000.

Later this year, Lexus will introduce its first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or PHEV. The technology will present itself in a mass-market model. In 2022, the brand plans to launch an all-new BEV. By 2025, Toyota’s luxury arm intends to introduce 20 new or improved models, including more than 10 BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs. The carmaker has another target for the same year – offer electrified propulsion options in all its models.

Lexus says that future models will feature DIRECT4 and steer-by-wire systems. In Lexus’ world, the former is an all-wheel-drive system, whereas the latter will help deliver a more dynamic driving experience. By 2050, the company will achieve carbon neutrality for its cars by addressing every aspect, such as parts, manufacturing, logistics and recycling.
