Saar: The South Korean carmaker took less than 20 years to achieve this feat.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) has been producing cars in India since 1998. In June 2018, the company has crossed the milestone of eight million units produced in India. In our Desi lingo, that’s more than 80 lakh units. That means it took nineteen years and six months to achieve this feat. Which model marked the magic 80 lakh number? It was the recently launched Hyundai Creta facelift. The table below makes for a perfect platform the South Korean carmaker to breach the 1 crore production mark in the first half of 2021.

Not all the units produced in India were sold in the domestic market. Out of the lot, just over 53 lakh units were sold on our shores, while a smidge above 27 lakh units were exported to other markets. For math lovers, that’s a ratio of approximately 2:1. Do you want more? Well, if you leave the first milestone of 10 lakh units out of the equation, Hyundai Motor India has managed to clock production of each of the successive 10 lakh units in approximately 21 months.

Hyundai will be celebrating this feat and its 20 years of production in India this year. Commenting on the achievement, Y K Koo, MD and CEO, HMIL, said:

“Thanking 8 million customers and remembering their brilliant moments with Hyundai cars, we will be launching a series of activities and emotionally connecting campaigns to mark the 20th year of excellence in sales and production in India.”

Quick guessing game. Which was the first-ever model that Hyundai Motor India produced? It was, of course, the Santro and the first lot was produced in 1998. In 2002, Hyundai launched the Accent CRDi in India, which went on to become another hit for the South Koreans. In 2006, Hyundai Research & Development Centre was set-up in Hyderabad, which not only supported the company’s Indian operations but also its R&D centre in Namyang. A couple of years later, in 2008, a second production line was added in the same vicinity. That took the per annum production capacity 7 lakh units.
