As promised, Tata Motors has officially commenced accepting bookings for the all-new Safari. The minimum token amount has been set at Rs 30,000. One can pay that online or by visiting the nearest dealership. Although the SUV hasn’t received a price list yet, which will happen on February 22, Tata Motors is already offering test drives.

The Safari is up for grabs in a variety of variants. Those looking for one with a 6-speed manual transmission have nearly twice the choice in derivatives than those who want a 6-speed automatic in the mix. The manual range comprises seven variants – XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ and XZ+ (available in six- or seven-seater form). The automatic gearbox is available in XMA, XZA and XZA+ (also with six or seven seats).

Powering the new Tata Safari is the same, Stellantis-sourced, 2.0-litre diesel engine that also does duty in the Harrier. It puts out 168bhp/350Nm, enough for most needs. Unfortunately, there’s no 4×4 system on offer just yet. That said, it is on the cards for a later date. Tata Motors is offering the Safari in three colours – Royale Blue, Orcus White and Daytona Grey. If you go for the entry-level XE variant, you’ll have to stick with the white shade.

As far as the list of features goes, it is quite an extensive one. As standard, the Safari will pack stuff like projector headlamps, all-disc brakes, Corner Stability Control, Hill-Hold Control, Traction Control, dual-function DRLs with turn indicators and roof rails. The list at the other end of the scale reads features like a panoramic sunroof, a 9-speaker JBL sound system, six airbags, 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, auto headlamps and wipers, 18-inch alloy wheels and Terrain Response Modes (Normal, Rough and Wet).

When it goes on sale, the new Tata Safari will compete with the MG Hector Plus and the Mahindra XUV500. Mind you; there’s an all-new XUV500 coming later this year. And, Hyundai too will be joining the party with a three-row Creta. Do you think the new Safari will live up to its iconic nameplate?
