Last month, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) India blessed us with the all-new Evoque. Now, it has launched the Land Rover Discovery Sport facelift. The SUV arrives within nine months of the world premiere. Like before, it is available in both petrol and diesel guises. And there are two trim levels to choose from – S and R-Dynamic SE. For the time being, however, the company has released prices of just the diesel-fed variants. The S trim costs Rs 57.06 lakh, wheres for the R-Dynamic carries a price tag of Rs 60.89 lakh. Both figures do not include any taxes. Land Rover is accepting bookings for the petrol-fed variants as well.

With the new styling updates, the Discovery Sport finally looks like a modern-day Land Rover. When the SUV debuted last year, it also introduced a 2.0-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech. That motor is on offer in India as well. Other than that, there’s a diesel engine on offer as well. Both have a cubic capacity of approximately 2.0 litres and come mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission as well as an all-wheel-drive system.

The petrol-fed motor pumps out 245bhp/365Nm, whereas the diesel produces 177bhp/430Nm. With the former engine under the bonnet, Land Rover claims that the Discovery Sport can hit 100kmph from zero in 7.8 seconds and top out at 224kmph. As you’d expect, those figures aren’t that high for the latter engine option as the 0-100kmph sprint takes 10.1 seconds and the top speed is 201kmph. All those performance figures are for the seven-seat derivatives. With less weight to lug around, the five-seater versions are tad bit quicker.

To ensure that the Discovery Sport facelift competes more effectively in its segment, Land Rover has given it an impressive list of features which come in as standard. The S trim level brings gizmos like a powered tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, LED-powered headlamps with automatic levelling, 12-way electrically-adjustable front seats, tyre pressure monitoring system, wireless mobile charger, two-zone climate control and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 180-watt, 6-speaker sound system.

The sportier and more expensive R-Dynamic derivative ropes in features like memory function for heated and electrically-operated ORVMs and the electric front seats, keyless entry, a 380-watt, 11-speaker Meridian sound system and a ClearSight interior rear-view mirror.

As before, the Discovery Sport remains the least expensive offering in India that comes with a Land Rover badge. Based on its pricing, the rivals include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Which one would you pick?
