Following the norm of tweaking a model’s recipe every year, Renault has introduced the 2022 Kiger. The sub-compact SUV has always been a head-turner, but it has become even more desirable with the latest updates. The changes include additional equipment, design tweaks inside and outside the cabin and new colour options. Prices for the updated range start at Rs 5.84 lakh.

Design changes first. On the outside, there’s a front skid plate, new chrome detailing on the tailgate and Turbo decals reserved for, well, the turbo variants. Indoors, the updated Kiger features a red fade dashboard accent and quilted emboss seat upholstery with red stitching.

Renault has also upped the game in the features section. For example, all Kiger variants now pack a PM2.5 air filter as standard. Also, the convenience of a wireless mobile charger (available earlier in an accessories pack) and cruise control has been added. And lastly, there’s a new dual-tone colour option – Metal Mustard with Mystery Black roof.

Remember the Kiger RXT (O) variant introduced last year as part of Renault’s 10th-anniversary celebrations? That was only available with the naturally-aspirated petrol mill, with both transmission options (5-speed manual and AMT). Now, however, Renault has injected the choice of the turbocharged mill as well. In other words, the same variant is available with the punchier engine, with both gearbox options (5-speed manual and CVT).

The Kiger continues its journey with two 1.0-litre petrol engines. The non-turbo one pumps out 71bhp/96Nm, whereas the turbocharged mill produces 99bhp/160Nm (152Nm with the CVT).

Renault confirms that bookings for the 2022 Kiger are now open. The model rivals a range of potent products in the same space, including the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Kia Sonet. So the question is – would you pick Kiger over all its competitors? If not, which one would be your choice?
