It seems Volkswagen just won’t give up on introducing snazzy editions of its mass-market products. In less than a year, we’ve received Sport Editions, Connect Editions and Black & White Editions of the Polo, Ameo and the Vento. And now, we have the Cup Editions of the trio. Like the special editions before, the Cup Editions feature a number of cosmetic enhancements inside and out. Volkswagen has named them aptly as they have been devised to support team India during 2019 Cricket World Cup. The Polo Cup Edition costs Rs 6.49 lakh; the Ameo Cup Edition costs Rs 6.19 lakh; and the Vento Cup Edition costs Rs 9.24 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

How exactly? On the outside, all three get white decals on the side with “Cup” and a “sticker strip” finished in blue, chrome fender ‘Cup Edition’ badge, body coloured ORVMs and sporty 15-inch alloy wheels which are different from what their standard versions get. To liven up the cabin with a sporty feel, they boast special ‘Cup Edition’ branded leatherette seat covers. Apart from the branding, the seat covers also feature vertical blue and white stripes.

Here’s what Steffen Knapp, who is the director at Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said about these newly introduced special editions in an official statement:

In India, cricket is not merely a sport, but a religion. It is the equivalent of soccer in Germany. World over, for Volkswagen, sport has played an integral part of our business. It not only brings in unity across the country but also displays passion, inspiration and excitement. Keeping this spirit in mind, we have launched the special Cup edition that showcases true sportsman spirit through its performance, power and precision across our product portfolio. We aim to reinstate the cheer and fun-to-drive experience among our customers this sports season.

The Cup Editions come with petrol-powered engines only. The Polo and Ameo are propelled by the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder mill that’s good for 76PS/95Nm. Under the Vento’s bonnet is a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine which produces 105PS/153Nm. In all three models, the sole transmission option available is the 5-speed manual unit.

So, there you have it. If you want a special version of the Polo, Ameo or the Vento, you have quite a lot of choice now. In India, the Polo takes on the Honda Jazz, Hyundai Elite i20 and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Soon, that list will be expanded with the introduction of the Toyota Glanza (rebadged Baleno). As for the Ameo, that’s a rival to the Tata Tigor, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Aspire and the Hyundai Xcent. Lastly, the Vento is Skoda Rapid’s step-sibling. That means it also competes with the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
