Saar: The upcoming SUV will be powered by a new 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine.

It was in July this year when Tata Motors christened the H5X concept SUV as Harrier. Back then, the only other set of confirmed details were that the Harrier will flaunt Tata Motors’ ‘Impact Design 2.0’ and will be built on the newly developed platform called Omega, which is in close relation to the Land Rover Discovery’s D8 architecture. In essence, the platform is monocoque in nature and the Harrier will be a five-seater. Now though, the homegrown automaker has revealed some details about the engine that will power the Tata Harrier.

Underneath the hood will live a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Tata Motors has christened the engineering behind the powerplant as Kryotec. Don’t go hunting for that word in the English dictionary as it doesn’t exist. Typical Tata! The company says that the word, Kryotec, “is inspired by Cryogenic rocket engine for its power and reliability. The new engine has been benchmarked against global standards of performance and refinement.”

Don’t hold your breath as Tata hasn’t revealed any power figures yet. What it has said though that the engine will have a 4-cylinder configuration with an electronically controlled Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) to help its case further. As has been the case in recent Tata cars, the Harrier will come with multiple driving modes which will work in tandem with the Terrain Response Modes of the electronic stability program (ESP).

Apart from that, the engine is claimed to be low on emissions and high on mileage. The Harrier’s engine will come with Low Friction Valve Train Architecture and Advanced EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The duo will help in making the Harrier a fuel-efficient SUV that meets BS VI standards of emission norms.

It is believed that the Kryotec engine that will power that Tata Harrier is in close relation to the 2.0-litre diesel mill that does duty in the Jeep Compass. It is also rumoured to get a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, while a Hyundai-sourced six-speed automatic will be available on higher trim levels. And thanks to the versatile platform, the Tata Harrier’s all-wheel-drive should be potent enough to tackle most of the rough stuff that we encounter on a day-to-day basis.

Tata Motors is expected to launch the Harrier in India as early as January next year. Once launched, it is expected to be priced in such a manner that it takes on everything from the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Captur to the Jeep Compass.
