What’s that headline? Well, earlier this month, Volkswagen started accepting bookings for the Taigun. However, the only people eligible were those who joined the #TaigunSquad. Now, however, it’s up for grabs for everyone. Those interested can do so either offline or online by paying a minimum token amount of Rs 25,000. As for the launch, that’ll happen soon as Volkswagen says deliveries will start in September 2021.

The German brand has also commenced production of the compact SUV. It’s being built at the Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. manufacturing facility at Chakan, near Pune.

The Taigun is available in four variants, covering two engines and three transmissions (two automatic and one manual). Entry-level derivatives will house a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol motor, which produces 114bhp/178Nm. It comes coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission by default. Alternatively, you can have it with a 6-speed torque converter. The other engine option is the turbocharged 1.5-litre unit that pumps out 148bhp/250Nm. That too comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. But there is an option of a 7-speed DSG.

Features? The Taigun will have ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, pollen control, a rear-view camera, hill hold control, and a cooled glovebox. The SUV will also pack a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless mobile charger, wireless app support, an electric sunroof, LED headlamps with DRLs, ambient lighting and six airbags.

Volkswagen’s first model underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform is available in five shades – Wild Cherry Red, Curcuma Yellow, Candy White, Reflex Silver and Carbon Steel Grey.

Once launched, the Taigun will compete directly with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks and its step-sibling, the Skoda Kushaq. Even the Tata Harrier can be considered a rival. Soon, though, the MG Astor will join the party. Out of the lot, which one would be your choice?
