Saar: After going on sale in Indonesia this summer, the new Ertiga will land on our shores during the last quarter of this year.

Suzuki’s Indonesian arm today unveiled the all-new Ertiga MPV at the 2018 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS). Into its second generation, the Ertiga has a lot to live up to. That’s because its predecessor has left quite a fan following behind. As of February 2018, over 6.76 lakh units of the Ertiga have been sold in Indonesia and India combined. Moreover, the compact MPV goes to 70 other countries globally.

The new Ertiga is underpinned by the company’s HEARTECT platform. That means the new model will be lighter, stiffer, safer and more fuel-efficient. The wheelbase, at 2,740mm, hasn’t changed. But, the MPV has grown in length by 130mm. That will translate to a more commodious cabin for passengers. For the uninitiated, the Ignis, Swift, Dzire and the Baleno are also built on the same HEARTECT platform.

In terms of appearance, the new Ertiga definitely looks more striking than its predecessor. The combination of sleeker headlamps, sportier bumper designs, WR-V-inspired boomerang-style taillamps and the reworked C-pillar help in making a bolder statement. Inside the cabin, the design is immediately reminiscent of its smaller siblings – Swift and Dzire. The flat-bottom steering wheel, the design and layout of the dashboard and the colour combination is nearly identical to the Dzire. That said, the India-spec Ertiga will be better equipped.

As far as the specs are concerned, the Ertiga gets a 1.5-litre petrol engine for the Indonesian market. It produces 104PS/138Nm and will be offered with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. For India, however, it is unlikely that Maruti Suzuki will get the same engine. Instead, it will be equipped with the same 1.4-litre petrol engine that does duty in the Ciaz too. On the diesel front, Maruti Suzuki might debut the new 1.5-litre unit which it has developed in-house. The same engine will be upgraded later to become BS-VI compliant too.

The Ertiga is an important product for Maruti Suzuki. It is the only MPV that the company sells in India. Apart from the Renault Lodgy, it doesn’t have any direct competition either. Suzuki has confirmed that the Ertiga will be manufactured in Indonesia and India, with exports planned from both countries. We expect Maruti Suzuki to bring the new Ertiga towards the end of this year.
