Saar: This update comes four years after Audi first touched upon introducing a 48-volt electrification system in its model range.

At the 2018 New York International Auto Show, where Audi showcased the RS 5 Sportback, the team from CarBuzz spoke to Anthony Garbis, product manager of the said vehicle. When asked about the possibility of electrifying future RS models, Garbis said, “You will see future Audi Sport models with electrification. We will be thrilling you in the near future. Pretty soon. You’re going to be seeing some future RS models with electrification and 48-volt will proliferate through the model lines in the future.”

Although electrifying go-fast Audis has been on the cars ever since 2014, when then-head of Quattro GmbH, Heinz Hollerwerger, was handling the show. But times now are apter than ever before to inject a second, zero-emission powerplant for performance cars. The reason is simple – stricter global emission regulations. Additionally, the slightly ‘greener’ versions of the RS models will also help the company to bring down the average emissions across its portfolio.

Audi’s RS range of models have long acted like a big bush of thorns for the Mercedes-Benz AMG-specced models and the BMW ‘M’ range of cars. But fuel-guzzling dinosaurs have no place in our future. At least, not for everyone. And that’s why we’ve even seen a range of hybridised supercars coming out of the production line. To name a few, BMW made the i8 and Honda introduced the NSX. Both cars are properly quick but thanks to their hybrid powertrains underneath, they way more fuel-efficient than any of their direct, petrol-only, rivals.

How cool would it have been if Audi had started the electrification of RS models back in 2014?! As far as the latest RS 5 goes, Audi India will be launching the Coupe version of it on April 11, 2018.
