It was on the cards, wasn’t it! After Skoda introduced the Rapid Matt Edition, it was only a matter of time before Volkswagen took over the headlines with something similar. Well, it has happened. What you see here are the Matt Editions of the Polo and the Vento. They are up for grabs for a limited period. The hatchback is based on the top-spec GT variant and costs Rs 10 lakh. In the sedan’s case, the special treatment (sort of) is available in two trim levels – Highline and Highline Plus. Here are the prices:

Time to break out the calculators. The Polo Matt Edition costs the same as the Polo GT. But, Volkswagen is offering the latter at a discounted price of Rs 9.85 lakh. So, there’s a difference of about Rs 15,000. Coming to the Vento Matt Edition, both variants cost more than the corresponding regular ones. By how much? If you compare their actual prices, the Matt Editions cost Rs 35,000 more. However, their offer prices differ only by Rs 15,000.

Coming the X-factor, the Matt Editions boast a matt Carbon Steel Grey paint. Even their bumpers and roofs don the same finish. To add some contrast in the mix, Volkswagen has painted the OVRM caps, door handles and spoilers in glossy black. Indoors, there’s nothing new. Neither of the models features anything different to its corresponding donor variant. That’s surprising because Skoda does offer a tweaked interior theme with the Rapid Matt Edition.

Yes, you guessed it! Volkswagen hasn’t even bothered to add any new creature comforts to the Matt Editions. So, the list of features includes an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, Hill Hold Control and a rear-view camera.

Both Matt Editions have the same powertrain – a 1.0-litre TSI motor mated to a 6-speed torque converter. In both cars, the engine pumps out 108bhp and 172Nm of peak torque. As you’d expect, the Polo is slightly more economical as it weighs less than the Vento.

So, there you have it. These two Volkswagens have joined a cult group – cars with a factory-finished matt paint job. Besides the Skoda mentioned above, the only other vehicle that qualifies to be in this group is the Kia Seltos X Line. In fact, that conceived the group.
