Worth checking out? Yes. Why? Well, in a world of glossy this and chrome-y that, a matt finish just seems cool. And, there’s another reason – the Skoda Rapid Matt Edition is a limited-run specimen. Only 400 examples will ever exist. So, for those two reasons, the sedan is worth a visit to the nearest authorised dealership.

There are two variants – manual and automatic. The former costs Rs 11.99 lakh, whereas the latter demands Rs 13.49 lakh. Run some math, and you’ll notice that the manual derivative costs precisely what the range-topping Monte Carlo does. However, the automatic is Rs 20,000 dearer than the standard, fully-loaded Rapid.

With math over, let’s get to what’s unique about the Matt Edition. Well, the name itself gives away the most significant selling point – the carbon steel grey paint job in a matt finish. Several gloss black elements complement it, including the 16-inch alloys, the grille, door handles, rear spoiler, and body side moulding. Indoors, the Rapid Matt Edition comes with a dual-tone Tellur Grey theme with black leatherette upholstery and Alcantara inserts. Unfortunately, there’s no additional equipment on offer.

As you’d expect, the Rapid Matt Edition is mechanically identical to the rest of the range. That means the 1.0-litre TSI motor pumps out 108bhp/172Nm, while the job of harnessing and feeding the oomph to the front wheels is handled by a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter.

Even though the Rapid is an aged product in its space, it still offers a handsome list of features. That includes stuff like cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and auto-dimming IRVM. Also on offer are features such as Hill Hold Control, LED DRLs, remote opening and closing of windows and automatic climate control.

The Rapid is on its last run in India. By the end of the year, Skoda will unveil the sedan’s replacement. As things stand, the Rapid offers excellent value for your money. That’s quite something when you consider the rivals include the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. And, of course, there’s the Rapid’s step-sibling – the Volkswagen Vento.
