Honestly, the Renault Captur had issues. It didn’t look like a traditional SUV, wasn’t the most feature-rich in the segment and had average performing powertrains. Some may say that there’s nothing else left. That’s not true. The Captur was the widest in its space of SUVs, had excellent ground clearance and looked refreshing. And on top of everything else, it offered a great ride.

Unfortunately for Renault, not many saw the Captur’s pluses. And there’s no subtle way of saying this, it tanked. There was hope for it to enter the BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) era, but that will not happen. The Captur has vacated the space from Renault India’s website, which could mean that it has gone for good. But there is hope that it might make come back in its new avatar that broke cover last year.

Renault India launched the Captur in 2017. It arrived with the same set of powertrains as the Nissan Terrano and the Renault Duster. They weren’t bad, but they weren’t the best in the business either. Mostly, though, it was the lean list of features, no automatic transmission and funny pricing that harmed the Captur. Let’s hope that when, or if, Renault brings the marque back to India, it plays a better game. In its latest generation, the Captur looks even better than before. All Renault needs to do find a more harmonious balance between specifications and price.

For now, Renault India marches on with three products – Kwid, Triber and Duster. All three already have BS6-compliant petrol powertrains. Last month, the Triber received the option of an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) in three trim levels. As for the Duster, which becomes the new flagship product for the company, it will get a new turbocharged petrol engine later this year. That’s the same powerplant which debuted with the 2020 Nissan Kicks.
