Are you the sort of person who’d happily trade practicality with aesthetics? Or, perhaps, you don’t like to follow the herd of landing a conventional-looking wagon. Well, if you fit in either of those spaces, here’s something that you’d like from BMW – the new X4. It first broke cover alongside its close sibling – the revised X3 – in June last year. Surprisingly, however, BMW India has introduced the new X4 in the ‘Black Shadow’ edition. And in this form, the crossover will only be available in limited numbers.

There are two M Sport variants – xDrive30i and xDrive30d. The former costs Rs 70.5 lakh, whereas the latter wears a price tag of Rs 72.5 lakh. Since both derivatives pack the same features, the price difference is only due to their different powertrains. The petrol-powered xDrive30i comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 248bhp/350Nm. Opt for the dearer one, and under the bonnet will be a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder heart pumping out 261bhp/620Nm.

Both engines come coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system. BMW says that the petrol-fed X4 can hit 100kmph from nothing in 6.6 seconds, whereas the diesel can complete that sprint in 5.8 seconds. Flat out, the former can hit 235kmph, and the latter can clock 245kmph.

In ‘Black Shadow’ forms, both are available in Black Sapphire and M Brooklyn Grey Metallic paintworks only. Indoors, they sport Leather Vernasca upholstery with black décor stitching, M interior trim (because of the M Sport badge), and Aluminium Rhombicledark with Pearl Chrome trim highlights.

Features? The list includes multiple drive modes, adaptive LED headlamps, a panoramic glass roof, powered tailgate, 20-inch alloy wheels and ORVMs with anti-dazzle function. Other creature comforts include three-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a head-up display, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, are also available.

So, there you have it. The new X4 has arrived to give the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe a tough fight. Mind you, the Porsche Macan is in the mix too, albeit a bit more expensive. Out of the lot, which one is your favourite?
