Ever since India started easing the grip on nationwide lockdown, Mercedes-Benz has been slotting in its pending activities. First came the customised financial solutions, and then two rampant AMG models. Today, it has expanded the portfolio of the GLE by launching two new variants – the 450 4MATIC and the 400 d 4MATIC. Since both get assembled in India, they carry reasonable price tags. The former costs Rs 88.80 lakh, whereas the latter wears a price tag of Rs 89.90 lakh.

Now, let’s clear the air. If you’re confused between these newly introduced derivatives and the ones launched in January, here’s what you need to know. Back then, Mercedes-Benz India launched the GLE 300 d and the 400 d Hip-Hop (CBU) variants. They are still on sale, the former at Rs 73.7 lakh and the latter at Rs 1.25 crore. No matter which version you choose, you’ll get the SUV in LWB (Long Wheelbase) form. And, depending on the variant, you might have to face a three-month waiting period.

Powertrain & Performance

As standard, the SUV in question comes with Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel-drive and a 9-speed automatic transmission. Those opting for the Mercedes-Benz GLE with the ‘450’ badge will get a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which produces 362bhp/500Nm. That’s enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 250kmph. Adding the cherry on top of the cake is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system which, in specific scenarios, aids the engine with an additional 21bhp/250Nm. And, of course, the added technology helps in fuel savings as well.

Then there’s the GLE 450 d. It packs a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel mill that produces 326bhp/700Nm. That’s enough for a run to 100kmph from nothing in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 245kmph. There’s no mild-hybrid tech here as diesels, in general, are more fuel-efficient compared to petrol power-plants.

Features

Since both new entrants are range-toppers, they get a whole lot of kit as standard. The list includes Multibeam LED headlamps, Airmatic suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, electric sun blinds and a powered tailgate. If all that isn’t enough, the SUV also packs gizmos like a digital instrument cluster, Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment system, four-zone climate control, wireless mobile charger and powered seats with memory and massage functions. As you’d expect, safety is top-notch too, with features like Active Parking Assist, nine airbags, a 360-degree camera, Blind Spot Assist and Active Brake Assist on offer.

What else?

Like all other Mercedes-Benz products, the GLE is available with pre-defined service packages. For the petrol variant, they start at Rs 77,600 for two years/unlimited km, whereas for the new diesel derivative they start at Rs 89,100 for the same period.

Rivals

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a direct rival to the likes of the BMW X5, Volvo XC90 and the Audi Q7. With new variants in the portfolio, Mercedes’ contender will surely entice a broader audience. What do you think?
