Saar: The sensible Swedes have even unveiled an XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid to show what they are on about.

Volvo Cars’ obsession with the year 2025 has reached another level. After announcing that it targets for fully electric cars to make 50 per cent of its global sales by the said year, it has now announced that at least 25 per cent of the plastics used in every newly launched Volvo car will be made from recycled material.

To achieve that target, Volvo Cars wants component suppliers from all over the world to work closely with carmakers and ensure that whatever materials are being produced to put on a car are as sustainable as possible. The company even took the pain to specially build a sample car to showcase what it is on about. It took the current-gen XC60 Plug-in Hybrid and replaced several of its plastic components with equivalents containing recycled materials. The car was revealed at the Ocean Summit during the Gothenburg Volvo Ocean Race stopover.

The tunnel console, for instance, is made from renewable fibres and plastics from discarded fishing nets and maritime ropes. Moreover, the carpet contains fibres from PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) plastic bottles and a recycled cotton mix from clothing manufacturers’ offcuts. PET fibres have also been used in the seats. To make sound-insulation material under the bonnet, Volvo Cars made use of used car seats. With those recycled materials on-board and an eco-friendly heart under the bonnet, this sample XC60 defines what Volvo aims to deliver from 2025. Respect!

Volvo is clearly on a mission to control and bring down the pollution on just about every front. From 2019, it will sell electrified variants of all its models and will phase out diesel engines, starting with the upcoming Volvo S60 sedan. The company is also on a mission to have climate-neutral manufacturing operations by 2025. The plant in Skövde, Sweden, became its first climate-neutral facility.
