At the Auto Expo 2020, Volkswagen promised to go on an SUV-offensive product strategy and launch four models to justify that. At the beginning of March 2020, the German brand introduced the Tiguan Allspace. Then, less than a week before India went under complete lockdown, Volkswagen launched the T-Roc. Both those SUVs took the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route to land in India.

Both models were well received as per the carmaker as the allotted units found takers within two months of resuming operations. Bookings for both those models will reopen soon. The second batch has more units reserved for the Indian market. With price corrections, the duo will cost more than what they did last year.

The third VW SUV to launch this year will be the Taigun. By far and away, that will be the most important product launch for the brand in India. Not only will it become the first Volkswagen under the India 2.0 project, but it will also land in a hugely competitive segment. With increased localisation, the Taigun promises to be a game-changer for Volkswagen in the country. As you must have read it already, the upcoming compact SUV will borrow most of the stuff from the Skoda Kushaq, which broke cover in production form earlier this month. Reports suggest that Volkswagen will unveil the production-ready version of the Taigun on March 31, 2021.

Three SUVs covered. So, which will be the fourth one? The refreshed Volkswagen Tiguan. It made its global debut in July 2020. And like the T-Roc and its bigger sibling, the Tiguan Allspace, it will arrive in India via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. The Tiguan facelift will borrow stuff from the Tiguan Allspace, including the 2.0-litre TSI engine. The same powerplant also does duty in the Skoda Superb, Audi Q2 and the Audi A4, and it will also power the upcoming BS6-compliant (Bharat Stage 6) Skoda Kodiaq.

For Volkswagen, there’s a straightforward aim – garner a 3 per cent market share. And the multiple SUV options should help in getting there. Out of the four VW SUVs mentioned above, which one are you most looking forward to?
