If you’re the sort of person who likes more ‘blackness’ in your ride, then this might suit you just right. Meet the Jeep Compass Night Eagle, a trim level that slots between the Longitude and the Limited iterations. There are two variations of the newcomer – diesel-MT (Manual Transmission) and petrol-DDCT (Dry Dual Clutch Transmission). In the former guise, the ex-showroom price is INR 21.95 lakh, whereas, in the latter, it is INR 22.75 lakh.

For the record, the pre-facelift Compass also had a Night Eagle version. However, that was a limited-run thing. For the new one, however, Jeep has mentioned any such thing. And how does it stand out? On the outside, the grille, grille rings, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rail, ORVMs, fog lamp bezels and a few other bits get a gloss-black finish. Inside the cabin, the SUV features a piano black interior, black cloth/vinyl seats with tungsten stitching and black vinyl door trims.

Features? The SUV packs a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7.0-inch display within the instrument cluster and dual-zone automatic climate control. Other features, such as auto-folding ORVMs, support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 6-speaker sound system, Hill Start Assist, All-Speed Traction Control System and Electronic Parking Brake, are also available.

There are no changes to report in the mechanical department as you’d expect. The diesel-fed Compass Night Eagle comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged motor that pumps out 171bhp/350Nm. However, the only transmission option here is the 6-speed manual. If you want an automatic gearbox, you’ll have to settle for the petrol-powered version. That has a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine that produces 161bhp/250Nm but comes coupled to only a 7-speed DDCT. And no, there’s no 4×4 available with either of those variants.

So, there you have it. The Compass Night Eagle Edition will try and lure customers away from rivals such as the Tata Harrier (#Dark Edition) and the MG Hector. Who do you think will come on top?
