Saar: It officially becomes the first sub-4 metre SUV that offers a diesel-automatic combo.

You were waiting for this one, weren’t you?! Well, it is here and now you can take a breather. Tata Motors has officially launched the Nexon AMT in India. Like we earlier reported, Tata has equipped the top-spec XZ+ variants (petrol and diesel) of the Nexon with its Self-Sift Gears (S-SG) tech and branded them as ‘HyprDrive’. The variant nomenclature given to them is XZA+ and while the petrol-powered variant is priced at Rs 9.41 lakh, the diesel will cost you Rs 10.3 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom Delhi). Compare those figures with the XZ+ dual tone variants and you’ll notice a difference of approximately Rs 40,000 only. Well done Tata!

Apart from a new variant badge and the new transmission, the Tata Nexon AMT is offered in a new, dual-tone paint job. The company calls it Etna Orange with Sonic Silver, with the latter for roof only. Another thing that Tata Motors boasts is that the Nexon is the only SUV in its category to have a diesel-automatic combination. Additionally, the AMT transmission offers the same multi-drive modes as the manual gearbox does – Eco, City and Sport. The rest of the feature list remains identical to the XZ+ variants. In classic Tata fashion, the kerb weight of the Nexon isn’t mentioned in the official brochure, let alone the change in weight due to the new but heavier transmission unit.

The two-pedal setup in the Tata Nexon AMT also comes with its own set of gimmicks to help make driving a bit more convenient. Apart from the manual tip-tronic mode, which when engaged lets the driver shift up and down, there’s also hill assist and creep functionality for forward and reverse gears. Other additions include a wearable PEPS key, which helps the driver to connect with the vehicle wirelessly to do things like lock/unlock the car.

Apart from the car itself, Tata Motors has also launched its own version of online car customisation platform – ‘Imaginator’ for the Nexon. The idea is to help the customer visualise the Nexon with the optional accessories. That should be fun!

There are no mechanical changes to report either. The 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel develop 110PS/170Nm and 110PS/260Nm respectively. Apart from the AMT unit, the Nexon continues to be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission as well.
