If you think you’ve heard the Kamiq name before, you’re right! It was actually last year, during the Beijing Motor Show when Skoda unveiled the Kamiq compact SUV. But what we saw back then was designed and engineered specifically for the Chinese market. What we’ll get to see at the Geneva Motor Show this year is the Skoda Kamiq for the European market.

Based on what the first teaser image hinted upon, we can deduce that the European Kamiq will carry the same split headlamp design that we first saw on the Skoda Vision X Concept at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. Skoda explains: “the word Kamiq comes from the language of the Inuit people living in northern Canada and Greenland. It describes something that fits as perfectly as a second skin in every situation.” The word Kamiq also helps Skoda retain its idiosyncrasy of naming all SUVs with words starting with a K and ending with a Q.

Skoda’s range of SUVs includes the Kodiaq and the Karoq. The Kamiq, which will become the third SUV in Czech carmaker’s global line-up, will sit below the Karoq. What do we know about the European Kamiq so far? It will be underpinned by Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform. Also, it will have new assistance systems as well as LED DRLs which double-up to become dynamic turn indicators. The European Kamiq will also differ in styling than the Chinese Kamiq.

For us in India, the upcoming Kamiq will be particularly interesting. The primary reason behind that interest lies in Kamiq’s MQB platform. We know Skoda Auto will be leading the India 2.0 project for Volkswagen Group India and the first product under that project will be a Skoda compact SUV. That SUV and all other made-for-India models that follow will be underpinned by MQB-A0-IN platform, which is a direct derivative of MQB. In short, we will get a good idea from the European Kamiq about what the 2020 SUV from Skoda India might pack.
