Saar: The Kamiq becomes the third and the smallest member of Skoda’s SUV family.

Czech carmaker Skoda has taken the wraps off its China-specific SUV, the Kamiq. The company did the honours at the Skoda International Media Workshop, which was held today at the Czech Embassy in Beijing. It becomes the third member of Skoda’s SUV family and will sit below the Kodiaq and the Karoq SUVs. Skoda, as promised, will showcase the Kamiq to the public at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show, which will run from April 25 till May 4, 2018.

Skoda says that the Kamiq will go on sale a couple of months after the Motor Show ends. What’s more, the Kamiq is planned only for the Chinese market. But we will remain hopeful that Skoda soon revisits the Kamiq’s recipe and finds it to be a good fit for the Indian market too. The Kamiq measures 4,390mm, 1,781mm and 1,583mm in length, width and height respectively. To put that in perspective, it is about 61mm longer, 32mm narrower and 26mm shorter than the Renault Captur in India. Kamiq’s wheelbase, which is rated at 2,610mm, is 63mm shorter than the Renault.

The company has also revealed that the Kamiq in China will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that puts out 110PS/150Nm. The engine will come mated to an automatic gearbox. Even those facts and figures put the Kamiq roughly in the same league as the Captur, Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster.

In terms of design, the Kamiq is unmistakably Skoda. The company’s current design language is quite evident. In fact, it looks remarkably similar to its slightly bigger sibling, the Karoq. It comes with 17-inch dual five-spoke alloy wheels which do look nice. Inside the cabin, there are various elegant and practical touches. For instance, a chrome lining runs across the width of the dashboard, highlighting the AC vents, centre console and the infotainment system. The angled installation of the speakers helps improve the acoustics.

On the features front, there’s a new voice control system, support for Apple CarPlay, Baidu and MirrorLink and the 8.0-inch touchscreen comes with an HD Ready resolution of 1,280×720. The onboard connectivity system also provides services like real-time traffic information, weather information and POI (point of interest) notifications.

So, there you have it. The Kamiq seems to be a quite a good package. That said if Skoda ever decides to sell the Kamiq outside China, and we hope that it does soon, the specs will surely be changed. What do you make of the Kamiq? Let us know in the comments section below.
