Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) has been crash-testing cars available in the Indian market since 2014. The latest to join the list is a subcompact MPV, conceived for the masses in the world’s second-most populous nation. It is the Renault Triber, and the pocket-friendly family wagon has done well. It has bagged a four-star safety rating for adults and three stars for child occupants. That performance makes it the safest seven-seater crash-tested in the mass market space. Here, check out the crash-test video:

No, it wasn’t the top-spec variant, which has four airbags, that went through Global NCAP’s rigorous testing regime. The specimen had just two airbags. Other safety gizmos onboard were a four-channel ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), seatbelt reminders for front occupants and front seatbelt pretensioners. Those safety features are part of all of Triber’s variants.

For frontal crash, Global NCAP drives the car into a deformable barrier at 64kmph. The image above showcases which sections of the body received what kind of protection from the vehicle. The positive takeaway is that none of the body parts is painted brown (weak) or red (poor).

Post examining, the independent crash-testing organization rated the Triber’s footwell area as stable. The bodyshell, however, wasn’t capable of withstanding further loadings and hence was tagged as unstable. Also, the recommended Child Restraint Systems (CRSs) did not show incompatibility. Because the Triber has a lap belt in the middle rear seat and offers no ISOFIX anchorages for child booster seats, the score for child protection could only climb as high as three stars.

The Triber is built on the same platform as the Kiger, which became the fourth offering from Renault India. The company says it has sold more than 75,000 units of the Triber in India. Besides that, it also exports the MPV to select markets in the SAARC region and South Africa. In the future, Renault aims to ship the Triber to more international markets and further expand its customer base in India.
