Saar: Surprisingly, the front of the Hyundai i20 Active doesn’t feature the signature ‘Cascade’ grille.

Hyundai has taken the wraps off the mid-life update of its i20 Active crossover. As of now, it has been revealed for the European market. The Hyundai i20 Active facelift comes after the carmaker launched the Elite i20, which went on sale in India during the 2018 Auto Expo.

The first thing to notice in the Hyundai i20 Active is that it doesn’t get the company’s ‘cascade’ grille at the front. Instead, it makes do with the same trapezoidal grille, moulded to a faux front diffuser. In fact, from the front, there is nothing to differentiate the refreshed i20 Active with the one it will eventually replace. Move over to the side and the re-designed alloy wheels come into the equation. Though the pictures here are of the European model, we believe that new alloy wheels will make it to India as well.

It is at the rear that the i20 Active gets the most amount of changes. The split taillamp enclosures are now in line with the refreshed Elite i20 and so is the placement of the number-plate area. For the uninitiated, that was moved from the centre of the rear bumper to the lower-middle section of the tailgate. The faux diffuser at the rear also gets a subtle design change. A dual-tone body colour combination is already available with the i20 Active in India. Whether the count of combinations goes up for us, remains to be seen.

The subtle makeover policy continues inside the cabin too. Apart from some new seat designs, nothing else has changed. In Hyundai’s books, it is clearly a case of ‘why fix something when it wasn’t broken’!

For India, the mechanicals will most likely remain unaltered. That means it will be offered with a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel engine. While the former comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and produces 83PS/115Nm, the latter is coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox and puts out 90PS/220Nm.

There is currently no word on when this mid-life update of the Hyundai i20 Active will launch in India. But it is inevitable. Whenever that happens, we expect Hyundai not to stray too far from the current price range of Rs 7 – 10.01 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
