Saar: The company has already begun the homologation process for its bestselling EV.

When Nissan unveiled the second-gen Leaf last year, it also mentioned that it will be coming to India as well. The company was adamant that it will be thoroughly tested in Indian conditions too. Well, that time is near as a report from ET Auto says that the Nissan Leaf will be coming to India this fiscal.

This was confirmed to the publication by Thomas Kuehl, who is the president of Nissan India. He reportedly said:

“We will come very soon with the EV car, in this fiscal year. We will bring the Leaf 2 to India, the one that has launched everywhere around the world. We’ll make it available for the public. We want to make sure that it is used by a lot of people.”

Nissan Flaunts Open-Top Leaf But Will Not Make It

A fleet of the current-gen Nissan Leafs will be brought into India for test drives in Chennai, at its 650-acre plant which the Japanese carmaker shared with its global alliance partner, Renault. Kuehl also mentioned that homologation activities for the Nissan Leaf have already begun.

Nissan Leaf Achieves 1 Lakh Sales Milestone In Europe

Kuehl also mentioned that the company is not looking at the Leaf as a volume product, primarily because it will be imported as a completely built unit which will make it expensive for the masses to afford. The other main reason why the Nissan Leaf will not be sold by the millions in India right now is that of the lack of supporting infrastructure.

Price-wise, the Nissan Leaf is expected to fall between the Rs 30-40 lakh bucket. The premium hatchback is powered by an electric powertrain that has 150PS of power and 320Nm of torque on tap. The 40kWh battery pack stores enough juice to last up to 400km between charging points. Speaking of which, the Nissan Leaf can be charged in 16 hours using a 3kW charger and 8 hours using the 6kW charger. With quick charging, it can replenish 80 per cent of the battery in 40 minutes.
