Saar: This time around though, Kia did it properly.

Kia Motors finally gave the Niro EV a debut that it rightfully deserved. And the company chose the 2018 Busan Motor Show to do that. Why finally? Well, the production-spec was half-heartedly revealed at the fifth International Electric Vehicle Expo, which took place in May 2018 in South Korea. But back then, not much was confirmed about Kia’s second all-electric passenger vehicle.

In Busan though, all was revealed about the Kia Niro EV. And, of course, the first thing to look for is that zero-emissions powertrain. As speculated during the Niro EV’s first reveal, it will be offered with two battery packs – 39.2kWh and 64kWh. While the former is good for a range of 240km on a single charge, the latter can deliver more than 380km.

Kia also revealed the power figures and they match out speculation too. An electric motor powering the front wheels has 204PS of power and 395Nm of torque on tap. Thanks to that and a slightly slippery aerodynamics, helps the Niro EV crack the zero to 100kmph sprint in 7.8 seconds.

In terms of design, the Kia Niro EV differentiates itself from the hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants with redesigned air intakes, new arrowhead-shaped LED DRLs and light blue-coloured highlights all around the car. The 17-inch alloy wheels have a new design too, which house the regenerative braking technology. At the rear, the bumpers have been tweaked and the taillamps now feature LED elements.

As far as features go, the Niro EV has some bespoke ones to help its case of being all-electric. For instance, the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system has been upgraded to help the driver locate nearby charging points and displays the remaining juice in the battery pack. The 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster has also been tweaked to make life easier for the driver. Other features include wireless mobile phone charging, ambient lighting and smart cruise control with stop & go support.

The Kia Niro EV is the second pure-electric car from the South Korean carmaker. We don’t see it coming to India but as far as technology is concerned, it will make its way on our shores in one package or another.
