It was in June this year when Japanese carmaker Nissan inked an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the government of Kerala to establish a new global centre for digital operations in India. The said facility, which Nissan calls as the Global Digital Hub, has been inaugurated at Technopark in Trivandrum, Kerala. The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, cut the ribbons in the presence of K. J. Alphons – minister of state for tourism; Kenji Hiramatsu – Japanese Ambassador to India; Shahi Tharoor – MP Thiruvananthapuram; and Tony Thomas – chief information officer at Nissan.

Nissan’s Global Digital Hub in Trivandrum is the first of several such software and information technology (IT) development hubs planned across the globe. The carmaker will establish them across Asia, Latin America, Europe and North America. These facilities will take charge of digital transformation for Nissan’s business by planting digital technology at the heart of key operations and services.

Here’s what the Chief Minister of Kerala said while inaugurating the facility in Trivandrum:

“Nissan coming to Thiruvananthapuram marks the beginning of a new era for Kerala IT. We will do our best to ensure Kerala proves to be Nissan’s second home after Japan.”

Tharoor added his comments regarding this development. He said:

“I am happy that the auto giant Nissan decided to set up their first global digital hub in my constituency. I am equally happy about the fact that I could play an early and useful role in convincing the Nissan management about the advantages Thiruvananthapuram offers. I wish Nissan Digital a very successful future.”

Nissan Betting Big On India

Nissan claims that the hub in Thiruvananthapuram will provide application portfolio management, enhanced user experiences, product development capabilities and data science. That’s not all as the digital hub will also play a vital role in developing and implementing cybersecurity and connectivity, as the industry progresses towards extended use of autonomous, connected and electric vehicle technology.
