Porsche doesn’t have a large SUV portfolio. But compare that to other luxury players like Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini, the Germans have twice as many SUV models. The magic number is two – Cayenne and the Macan. The latter of the two received its mid-life update last year. However, Porsche has already made an announcement about the next generation of the Macan.

The German carmaker says that the new Macan will be fully electric. It is slated to go into production at the company’s Leipzig plant early next decade. That means it will share the premises with the Taycan and its derivatives. For the record, the Taycan is slated to launch by the end of this year and will become Porsche’s first-ever electric vehicle (EV). It will be followed by the Taycan Cross Turismo – a more practical alternative to the Taycan all-electric sports car.

Back to the Macan. Porsche’s announcement of its baby SUV going fully electric has left some ambiguity. Going all-electric is great but does that mean that the Macan will not have any variants with a plug-in hybrid powertrain or a conventional internal combustion engine only? We think that Porsche can but won’t take such a massive leap. Reason? There are markets around the globe where the infrastructure to support the existence of pure EVs is still in a nascent stage. Ignoring some of them could have adverse effects on Porsche’s game plan.

Porsche Introduces Refreshed Macan S

The company hasn’t revealed much about the new Macan but it has shared a couple of fundamental details. Just like the Taycan, the next-gen Macan will feature the 800-volt tech. What’s more, it will be built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which was developed in collaboration with its step-sibling – Audi AG. By 2022, Porsche will be investing over 6 billion euros in electric mobility and by 2025, it aims to have 50 per cent of all new vehicles with an electrified heart.
