Saar: While that does read like a juvenile way of writing “Taken”, Porsche says it roughly translates to “lively young horse”.

The Porsche Mission E Concept has been grabbing the news headlines for the company ever since it was first revealed in September 2015. Not anymore. That’s because it will be topping the news charts with its actual name – the Porsche Taycan. The German sportscar maker says that the name roughly translates to “lively young horse”, referencing the imagery at the heart of the Porsche crest.

Porsche christened the Mission E Concept as Taycan as part of its “70 years of sports cars” ceremony. The Porsche Taycan is slated to enter production in late 2019 and for that Porsche is busy upgrading its facility at the Zuffenhausen headquarters. A dedicated assembly area, a new paint shop and a conveyor bridge for transporting the painted bodies and drive units to the final assembly area are presently under construction. Additionally, the existing engine plant is being upgraded to produce electric drives and a body shop will also be developed.

The Porsche Taycan will be powered by two electric motors with a total power output of 600PS. The nought to 100kmph sprint can be completed in less than 3.5 seconds and reach 200kmph in less than 12 seconds. The onboard batteries with approx 90kWh storage are good enough to deliver a range of over 500km on a single charge. With the recommended quick charging specifications, Porsche claims that the Taycan can replenish its batteries for 100km in just 4 minutes.

Porsche has also confirmed that it plans to invest in excess of six billion euro (over Rs 47,725 crores) in its electrification push by 2022. Out of the lot, around 500 million euro (over Rs 3,900 crores) will be spent to carve out derivatives and variants of the Taycan and one billion euro (over Rs 7,800 crore) will be used for developing electrified variants of the existing product range. For new technologies, charging infrastructure and smart mobility, Porsche will shed around 700 million euro (nearly Rs 5,600 crore).
