All carmakers have their special skunkworks who thrive on turning ordinary into extraordinary. Toyota too has such a division, by the name Toyota Racing Development or TRD. Over the years, the TRD team has produced some fantastic machines, and it is also responsible for Toyota’s strong record in motorsports. All that is great but what do we make of the TRD moniker on a large SUV like the Fortuner, especially if it doesn’t get any mechanical advantage over its regular version?

Well, go ahead and make whatever sense you want but Toyota has introduced a new, special-edition of its bestselling SUV in India. Dubbed as the Fortuner TRD Celebratory Edition, it carries a price tag of Rs 33.85 lakh. Reservations for the TRD badge are quite clear, but there are none for Celebratory Edition. The variant arrives to celebrate ten years of Fortuner in India. Can you believe it is that old in the market? Ignorable fact: Toyota has sold nearly 1.6 lakh units of the SUV over the last decade.

Forming the foundation of the new entrant is the two-wheel-drive automatic variant with the 2.8-litre diesel engine. That, by the way, is priced at Rs 31.70 lakh. Since there are none, absolutely no, mechanical changes, the difference comes from the looks department. On the outside, the TRD-marked Fortuner new front and rear bumpers, a faux skid plate at the front, TRD branding at either end and black 18-inch alloys. What’s more, the celebratory derivative is only available in white body colour with a blacked-out roof. Changes inside the cabin are limited to maroon-and-black seats with TRD logos, red stitching on the dashboard and red inserts on doors.

For all those cosmetic enhancements, Toyota is asking for an additional Rs 2.15 lakh. Come to think of it; the TRD Celebratory Edition costs Rs 2.04 lakh more than four-wheel-drive (4WD) manual variant, and Rs 25,000 more than the 4WD automatic. Is it worth paying those extra amounts? You guys decide.

Note: All prices given above are ex-showroom India.
