As promised, Morris Garages India has officially begun accepting bookings for its first product – the Hector. The Chinese-owned British carmaker is asking for a minimum token amount of Rs 50,000. If you are one of the interested, you can deposit that money either via MG Motor India’s official website or by visiting your nearest of the 120 authorised centres across India. If you think that count is a bit too less for a country like India, don’t worry as by September this year the carmaker is aiming to increase it to 250. If you want to test drive the SUV, you can schedule one from June 12. Test drives will begin across dealerships from June 15, 2019.

The Hector will be available in four trim levels – Style, Super, Smart and Sharp – covering two engine and transmission options, each. As standard, it will pack features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, disc brakes on all wheels, electronic stability control programme, traction control system, rear AC vents, roof rails and rear parking sensors. Higher trim levels will bring in stuff like a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and iSmart tech, six airbags, a powered tailgate, a 360-degree camera, ambient lighting, auto headlamps and wipers, powered driver’s seat and a panoramic sunroof.

On the mechanical front, buyers have the option to choose between a 1.5-litre, turbo-petrol engine and a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel. While the former is good for 143PS/250Nm and can be had with either a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed, dual-clutch AT, the latter produces 170PS/350Nm and is only available with a 6-speed MT. The petrol engine is also available with a segment-first 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

As far as colour options are concerned, a total of five are available – Candy White, Aurora Silver, Starry Black, Burgundy Red and Glaze Red. The Hector is a direct rival to the Tata Harrier and the Jeep Compass. All three are powered by the same diesel engine from FCA. The Hector will launch later this month and we expect MG Motor India to price it between Rs 15-20 lakh.
