Saar: The go-fast GLC dethroned the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio to become the fastest SUV around the ‘Green Hell’.

Mercedes-Benz has bagged another lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. It took the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ and lapped the 20.8 kilometres, north-loop of the ‘ring in 7 minutes and 49.369 seconds. With that time recorded, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ became the fastest series production SUV in the world at the Nürburgring. The previous lap record holder, in the same category, was the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which went around the same track in 7 minutes 51.7 seconds. Here’s the video of the new lap record holder:

The folks from Stuttgart claim that with AMG development engineer Markus Hofbauer behind the wheel, the most powerful iteration of the GLC broke the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s record by over 2 seconds in the first go. That said, the Alfa Romeo held the lap record at the ‘Green Hell’ for well over a year.

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ is powered by a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 which develops 510PS of power and 700Nm of torque. It is backed by a slick 9-speed, AMG-spec automatic transmission and Mercedes’ 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The setup is enough for the SUV to hit 100kmph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 250kmph. That limit, by the way, can be increased to 280kmph with the optional AMG Driver’s package.

On the other hand, the Alfa Romeo is powered by a 2.9-litre, twin-turbo V6 which develops the same amount of power as the GLC 63 S but has 100Nm less torque. Apart from the additional torque, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ also comes with several gizmos which help in going around corners faster. The list includes air suspension with adaptively variable damping, fully variable torque distribution, locking rear-axle differential and ceramic composite braking system.

Less than a month ago, Mercedes-Benz bagged the lap record for the fastest four-seater production model in the world at the north-loop of Nürburgring. That title was claimed by the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+, which went around the fearsome track in 7 minutes and 25.41 seconds. The car is powered by the same engine as the GLC 63 S. But in the GT 63 S, that engine produces 639PS/900Nm. Now that Mercedes-Benz has had the taste of setting benchmarks at the world-famous track, expect it to bring out more AMG-spec models to try and achieve more glory.

A car nutter by heart. A hopeless engineer by education. Gunning for one goal - simplify cars.
