Eyeing to buy a diesel-powered Maruti Suzuki model? Well, you have until March 31, 2020, to get one as the company has decided to axe all its diesel-fed cars from April 1, 2020. For the uninitiated, that’s the date when the Supreme Court of India’s order of banning the sale of BSIV-compliant cars will kick in. Maruti Suzuki says that from thereon, it will sell only petrol-fed models.

Currently, with the exception of its small cars, Alto, WagonR and Celerio, Maruti Suzuki offers diesel engine options with all other models. In fact, the Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross aren’t available with a petrol engine at all. That means, before the current fiscal year comes to an end, both those models will receive a BSVI-compliant petrol engine and, of course, an upward revision in prices.

Maruti Suzuki says the reason why it will stop making and selling diesel-powered cars in India is because of the price gap between the BSVI-compliant petrol and diesel derivatives. However, it did go on to mention that if there is a demand for diesel cars after the next fiscal year starts, it can introduce a product within a reasonable timeline. That product will have no less than a 1.5-litre engine.

Earlier this year, India’s largest carmaker introduced its new, BSIV-compliant, 1.5-litre diesel engine with the Ciaz. We are sure you would agree all that effort that Maruti Suzuki put to make a new diesel engine is going down the drain. The company says that all 16 models that it currently sells in India would be upgraded to become BSVI-compliant before the March 31, 2020, deadline. That process started earlier this week with the Baleno, followed by the refreshed Alto which also houses an upgraded engine that meets the upcoming emission norms.
