India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has triggered a massive voluntary vehicle recall. As many as 1,81,754 units manufactured between May 4, 2018, and October 27, 2020, require inspection. That count covers petrol versions of the Ciaz, XL6, Ertiga, S-Cross and Vitara Brezza. In other words, all models that house the 1.5-litre engine with mild-hybrid tech.

The reason? There could be a possible issue with the Motor Generator Unit. That’s the Smart Hybrid tech that Maruti Suzuki couples the internal combustion engine with. The carmaker would be reaching out to the owners of all affected vehicles, with the inspection process scheduled to start in the first week of November 2021.

If your vehicle is part of this recall, Maruti Suzuki has advice for you. Until your vehicle is inspected and given an okay, avoid driving it through places with standing water. Also, ensure that water doesn’t come in contact with the electronic/electric components of the car. As these things go, the entire process of inspection and rectification (if required) will be free of cost for the owners.

Maruti Suzuki hasn’t shared how long it would take to check and repair one vehicle. So it is highly recommended that you take an appointment before heading towards the nearest authorised workshop. That’s when the time comes. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is part of this service campaign, you can confirm that by visiting the carmaker’s website and entering the chassis number. It is part of the registration certificate and the vehicle’s invoice.

Ever since India has migrated from BSIV to BS6 standards of emission norms, the carmaker has stuck with petrol offerings only. Apart from selling the models mentioned above, the Indo-Japanese carmaker also retails Ignis, Baleno, Celerio, Swift, Eeco, Alto, Wagon R, S-Presso and Dzire. Barring the first two, which are sold via the Nexa range of dealerships, the rest come under the umbrella of Maruti Suzuki Arena.
