If you want a Maruti Suzuki van for personal or commercial use, the only option available is the Eeco. In case you didn’t notice, the legendary Omni was pulled off the production line for good earlier this year. As far as the Eeco is concerned, it received a price hike in April 2019 which came courtesy of some added safety features. Now, to make the van compliant with the latest crash test norms, Maruti Suzuki has made some structural upgrades and bumped up the prices again.

Eeco’s revised price list starts at Rs 3.61 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 6.61 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In other words, one would have to shell out between Rs 6,000-9,000 extra for the Eeco, depending on the variant. For the record, the van is available as a five-seater and a seven-seater for personal use. The Eeco is also available in Cargo as well as a Care (ambulance) forms.

It is not the final price revision for the Eeco in the current financial year. Its powertrain will be upgraded to meet the stringent BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) levels of emission norms, and that activity will result in an upward price revision. Presently, the Eeco comes with a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine which produces 72bhp/101Nm. Maruti Suzuki also offers factory-fitted CNG kits with the van. With Compressed Natural Gas goes into the combustion chamber, the motor puts out 62bhp/85Nm. The only transmission option is a 5-speed manual which feeds the power to the rear wheels only.

The Eeco has no direct rivals in the passenger vehicle space. However, if you do want something on the same lines, models like the Datsun Go+ and the Renault Triber could be worth considering. Both of them offer more creature comforts than the Eeco. However, Maruti’s sole van provides a bit more practicality.
