You’ll have to look a bit harder to notice that this is the updated Land Rover Discovery. No, it hasn’t lost the weird tailgate design. What it has done is to receive a few changes in some other areas. Design first. Land Rover has equipped the Discovery with revised front and rear bumpers, new LED-powered headlamps and taillamps, new side vents and a Gloss Black panel at the back which incorporates the Discovery lettering.

Inside the cabin, one can configure the seating layout using the central touchscreen. Land Rover has also updated the second-row seats which, as per the company, now offer better overall comfort courtesy of longer and thicker cushions and “careful seat profiling”. The rear AC vents have been moved from the B-pillars to the centre console. And yes, the second-gen Activity Key is also part of the package. The R-Dynamic trim ropes in elements finished in Gloss Black and Shadow Atlas outdoors and dual-tone leather and contrast seat stitching indoors.

Onwards with technology updates. Leading the way is the new 11.4-inch full-HD Pivi Pro infotainment system with a built-in back-up battery. That addition helps initiate the navigation more quickly. Also, there’s dual-sim support which means the updated Discovery comes with two LTE (4G) modems. That means passengers can carry out multiple functions simultaneously at faster speeds. The list of newly-added features also includes 3D mapping within the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a full-colour head-up display, a PM2.5 air filter, new four-spoke steering wheel, ClearSight Ground View system and a new gear selector.

Land Rover is offering the updated Discovery with two petrol and diesel engines each. Three out of them benefit from mild-hybrid technology. The one that doesn’t is the sole 2.0-litre, four-cylinder motor producing 296bhp/400Nm, while others have a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder configuration. The six-pot petrol mill generates 355bhp/500Nm, whereas the diesel engines offer between 245bhp/570Nm and 296bhp/650Nm. All powerplants come coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system. Land Rover is also offering Adaptive Dynamics with all variants of the Discovery.

The updated SUV wears a starting price tag of GBP 53,655 (~Rs 52.5 lakh) in the UK. Soon, it will arrive on Indian shores too. Expect that to happen during the first half of next year.
