Jeep India has expanded the Compass lineup by introducing a new trim level – Sport Plus. It is available with both petrol-manual and diesel-manual combinations. While the former is priced at Rs 15.99 lakh, the latter wears a price tag of Rs 16.99 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom India). As the name suggests, the Sport Plus trim sits above the Sport and below the Longitude trim levels. Before we get to what the newly introduced trim offers, let’s understand its pricing.

The petrol-powered Sport variant is priced at Rs 15.40 lakh, whereas the diesel-fed one is priced at Rs 16.60 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom Delhi). Those prices make petrol and diesel Sport Plus variants more expensive by approximately Rs 59,000 and Rs 39,000, respectively. So, what do you get for that extra money?

On the outside, the Compass Sport Plus trim gets 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels, black roof rails, a ‘Sport Plus’ badge at the rear and rear parking sensors. Inside the cabin, the only addition is a dual-zone climate control system. Other features such as a 5-inch Uconnect infotainment system, electronic parking brake and a multifunction steering wheel are available. On the safety front, the Sport Plus gets the same package as the Sport does, offering features like dual airbags, all-disc brakes, ABS with EBD and electronic roll mitigation.

Predictably, there are no mechanical changes. The 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine puts out 173PS/350Nm and the 1.4-litre, turbo-petrol is good for 163PS/250Nm. Both engines are offered with a 6-speed manual transmission. As far as colour options go, the new entrant can be had in white, red, black, blue and two shades of grey.

Unsurprisingly, the Compass is Jeep’s and FCA’s bestselling car in India right now. Its list of rivals includes the Mahindra XUV500, Tata Harrier and the Hyundai Tucson. Later this year, the MG Hector will join the same list and by the end of 2020, we’ll have the Citroën C5 Aircross as well.
