We are pretty sure that you’ve seen a completely camouflaged, boxy car that has been caught testing on several occasions. Up until now, Renault India called it the RBC. The codename, however, will not be used anymore. Why? Because the upcoming car has received its actual name. It will be called the Triber. The word doesn’t exist in the English language. But, evaluating the single image showcased on the website, we can relate to what Renault is trying to capture.

Okay, so what do we know about the car? First of all, it will be underpinned by a platform which is closely related to that of the Kwid’s. And that is by no means a bad thing. The next thing to notice is the car’s shape itself. Renault says that the Triber has been designed and developed for India. We can even call it a bigger Kwid. Why? Contrary to the common notion that the Renault Triber will be a compact MPV, its shape is more relatable to a hatchback.

Renault claims that the Triber will define a new segment in India. Even though it will have a small footprint, it’s boxy proportions will provide a roomy interior, with clever touches to make the best possible use of the space. There is no word from Renault about the Triber’s powertrain options. But it could house a gutsier version of the 1.0-litre engine from the Kwid. Transmission duties will be handled by a 5-speed manual as standard. However, the inclusion of an AMT is also highly likely.

On the features front, the Triber must have the basic set of safety gizmos in place. That list includes ABS, seatbelt reminder for front seats, rear parking sensors, an airbag (at least) and speed alert system. We expect the Triber to bring features like LED DRLs, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system from the Kwid, dedicated AC vents for all rows, a funky dual-tone interior theme and a good ride quality.

Renault India has confirmed that the Triber will launch in the second half of this year. As stated above, the Triber won’t really have a direct rival in place. In India, it will slot between the Kwid and the Lodgy and will fall in the sub-4 metre space.
