Hyundai Motor India is set to enter the hotly contested sub-4 metre SUV segment with the Venue. Slated to launch on May 21, 2019, it can now be booked online or by visiting an authorised dealership with a minimum token amount of Rs 21,000. Hyundai has devised a total of thirteen derivatives of the Venue, covering four engine-transmission combinations.

The Hyundai Venue will be available in four main trim levels – E, S, SX and SX+. The SX trim will also be available in SX Dual Tone and SX (O) variations. As far as engine-transmission combinations go, the 1.2-litre petrol MT will be offered in E and S trim levels, whereas the 1.4-litre diesel MT can be had in E, S, SX, SX Dual Tone and SX (O). The debuting 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine can be had with either a manual transmission or a 7-speed, dual-clutch AT. The MT will be available in S, SX, SX Dual Tone and SX (O), while the two-pedal setup will only be offered in S and SX+ trim levels.

Let’s take a moment and understand what Hyundai has done with the list of variants. If you want the option of a Dual Tone finish by default, you can’t have the new engine under the bonnet. Similarly, if you want all the toys fitted, you’ll have to make do with the petrol-AT combination only. Amongst the list of variants, only the S trim is available with all four engine-transmission combinations.

The 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.4-litre diesel engines have been lifted from the Hyundai Elite i20. Even the power and torque figures are identical. The 1.0-litre petrol engine, however, is the main highlight. With 120PS/172Nm on tap, it is the most powerful amongst the three engines here. Compare those figures with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine found under the hood of the Ford EcoSport, and the Venue has 5PS less power but 2Nm more torque.

Considering the vast list of features and the multiple engine-transmission combinations available, the Hyundai Venue’s price list is expected to start at around Rs 8 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom). That’s, more or less, at par with the Mahindra XUV300 and the Ford EcoSport. The Venue will also compete with the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Honda WR-V.
